LOCATION –The A ARRIBANA house is located in the village of São Pedro de Nordestinho, in the heart of the Nordeste district, Sao Miguel, Azores. Nordeste is the kingdom of Pico de Vara, the highest point of São Miguel and one of the best preserved and richest landscape of the island. Nordeste is the doorway to peace and the contemplation of nature.
The main building was used as a home and comprised a ground floor along with a one-window attic, divided in two bodies with two different coverings and perpendicularly-orientated roofs. In the surroundings of this accommodation, there was an agricultural annex (the current re-constructed A Arribana), used to support farming activities. Both buildings surrounded a patio (that named the complex), which had direct access to the road and where the pig pens and the latrine were located.
HISTORY – The A ARRIBANA belongs to a complex of two houses called Casas do Pátio. The constructions that currently form the “Casas do Pátio” complex (“Casa do Tanque” and “A Arribana”) were probably built during the second half of the 19th century, following the typical architecture of the area where they are located.
Inside, there is a mix of past and present elements: restored antique furniture which harmoniously coexists with contemporary pieces and modern equipment. This cottage is adapted and equipped for guests with reduced mobility. It has a double room, a living-room with fully equipped modern kitchenette and with a traditional wood stove and a bathroom. Outside the stone house there is a parking area, a croquet court and a covered area with barbecue.
For the entertainment of its guests, the A ARRIBANA provides, at no additional cost, cable TV, DVD player, HI-FI sound system, a small library, indoor games, two bicycles and a croquet court.
At their arrival, the guests will find bread and homemade jams, milk, coffee, tea, fruit, water, butter and cheese. In each stone house there are also some basic grocery items.
The capacity of the cottage
is 2 people in one double room.
The price includes: change of towels, bed linen and house cleaning every 4 days; amenities in the bathroom; firewood for the barbecue and the stove heater, as well as the free use of all the equipment provided.
DESCRIPTION – The A ARRIBANA house is surrounded by the blue sea on the horizon and the deep green of the surrounding mountains. It has a large garden area with some native plants, fruit trees and flowers. Besides, the guests of the two stone houses forming the “Casas do Pátio” complex (“Casa do Tanque” and “A Arribana”) also have a barbecue and a pool at their disposal, from where it is possible to enjoy wonderful sunsets.
